In January 2023, Genesis Global Capital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.1 A few days before that, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charged Gemini and Genesis with illegally raising funds from retail investors via the now-terminated Gemini Earn program.2 Users deposited crypto in an Earn account and loaned it to Genesis in exchange for interest payments. Gemini paused account withdrawals in November 2022 because Genesis lacked sufficient funds to meet withdrawal requests.3
